3/6/2008Top Forestry Award

A GROUP of volunteers have transformed an area of woodland which until recently was regarded as a no-go zone by local people.
And this week they were recognised by Environment Minister Mike Russell who presented them with a top forestry award.
The members of Drumchapel Woodland Group were recognised for their efforts in improving Garscadden Wood.
They set about picking up litter, laying paths and tending to some of the trees bringing about a remarkable transformation.
Mr Russell said: "With regeneration and redevelopment going on across Drumchapel, this group of enthusiastic volunteers decided to extend that work to the long-neglected Garscadden Wood.
"Garscadden Wood used to be a place to avoid but in only a couple of years, the Drumchapel Woodland Group have brought about a huge transformation.
"It is now a much more welcoming place for people of all ages to visit and is now a community focal point and a valuable addition to local resources.
"Their efforts are helping to boost the sense of community spirit in Drumchapel and encouraging people to take a pride in their areas.
"I must join with the judges and say their achievement is very impressive. They are very worthy winners and I wish them every success in the future."
Mr Russell presented the Tim Stead award for Social and Community Forestry, to Drumchapel Woodland Group chairman Wullie Forey.
